Ladies' Night FitFest!

This past week we held our first Ladies' Night FitFest at our new Kaloko store location.  Prompted by an idea from our sports bra vendor Moving Comfort, we decided to turn it into a fun, informational evening for all ladies.

Each attendee received a goodie bag from Moving Comfort and Brooks and then were able to visit four different stations with different products and services from local businesses.

Dr. Monica Scheel and her associates Vicki Brasher and Jessica Marshall showed us what sun exposure does to the skin on our faces, through the use of their "scary box." The box isn't so scary, but I can't remember the correct term for the instrument!  Each woman was able to put her head into the illuminated box, and Dr. Scheel and her staff pointed out imperfections or areas of concern that aren't visible to the naked eye. They also discussed and sampled products that are important for healthy skin, especially here in Hawaii.

Mary Mullahey from M2Fitness quizzed everyone on their health and fitness knowledge with some pretty eye-opening figures.  For instance, did you know that the average person will walk 70,000 miles in his or her lifetime? I'm sure our customers are on the high side of that average with all the running we do! Mary also highlighted some of the great features of M2Fitness, including its great personal training staff and intimate atmosphere.

Phillip Bruneau and Pua Paikuli of Pau Hana Massage had a popular station, since they brought their massage table and were able to demonstrate their techniques on some achy runners!  Whether it's getting at a tight IT band or piriformis or relieving back pain, they can do it all with their healing touch.

Finally, we offered bra fittings for the ladies to make sure everyone was wearing the right size sports bra.  Then they were able to try on several Moving Comfort sports bra options for running, walking or whatever activity they participate in.

Alexis bra - killer abs not included, unfortunately.
We also took a collection for used bras to benefit the Free the Girls charity in Africa, something Dr. Nancy Fitzgerald of Makai Chiropractic did for the past couple of months.  Since all women have a couple of bras that have either outlived their lifespan or never fit quite right in the first place, we took up quite a collection!

At the end of the evening we held some raffle drawings with prizes donated by the businesses, including t-shirts, Big Island Running Company gift cards and gift certificates for services donated by Monica Scheel Dermatology.

Thanks to everyone who attended and special thanks to Monica, Jessica, Vicki, Phillip, and Pua who helped make this event a great success.  Also thanks to Big Island Running Company employees Allen and Maggie who helped with the event and John who covered the Alii Drive store while we were having fun!

We may try to have more of these events in the future, so stay tuned!
