An Easter Weekend of Racing

Since I took a large portion of 2013 off of running and racing while I battled plantar fasciitis, it had been awhile since I'd been able to enjoy all of the fun local events as a participant.  I solved that problem last weekend by running two races in the span of 15 hours and then attending a third the next day.  It was great to be back again, but I was very happy to have a rest day after that!

On the afternoon of Good Friday, I drove over to Hilo to participate in the Emily Wedemann Memorial 5-miler.  Emily was a longtime supporter of the Big Island Road Runners and the running community on the east side of the island.  Her sons are also great assets to that community with Joe serving as race director for the new Hilo Triathlon while Bob serves as the race director for the Big Island International Marathon. Emily passed away a few years ago from cancer, so instead of an entry fee, the run collections donations to the American Cancer Society (almost $600!).

The run started at Coconut Island, ran a loop around Liliuokalani Gardens, headed up the Suisan Bridge to Bayfront before turning back, running along Banyan Drive and out on Kalanianole Ave towards the port and back.

Tony O'Toole was the first men's finisher with a time of 34:28.  Harrison Bierman (34:40) and Patrick Baker (36:29) took second and third for the men.

Women's Winner Emily Wallingford (Photo by Big Island Road Runners)
Emily Wallingford took first place for the ladies with a time of 36:55.  I followed in second place in 39:07, with Sarah Bidwell finishing third in 39:10.

Full results from the race are available here. Some additional photos of the race are below:

Thanks to Big Island Road Runners for hosting this race! After the run was over, I drove back to Kona, grabbed a quick dinner and hopped in bed to be ready for the next race - the 33rd Annual Mac-a-thon 5k/10k in Honaunau.

Jason and I take turns attending this race because it's on a Saturday morning and conflicts with our training groups/store opening, but it's always one we fight over.  Several people I've talked to say this is their favorite race on the island.  The course is challenging (running the road from Honaunau to Kealakekua Bay and back), but the post-race festivities and local vibe are well worth it.

This race is full of perennial competitors - including race starter Teddy Ginn, who at age 81 is still going strong!

After his blessing, the 10k took off on the course.  Kris Keough from Kealakekua used his knowledge of the course to his advantage and beat out Nathanael Mole to take first place.  Big Island Running Company's John Ferdico was unable to hold off the women's winner Stacy Schlocker-Zurich, but held on to third place for the men.  After Stacy, second place went to Anna DeLeon and Nancy Kramer took third. Full results from the 10k are here.

Nancy Kramer
The 5k started 5 minutes after the 10k and went out with a bang - keiki charging ahead.  Of course, that lasted about 200 yards before they were gasping for air. At the front of the race, it was a battle between Tai Scarborough (pushing his son Lihau) and Joe Fairchild, with Joe surging ahead to finish in 18:41 to Tai's 19:03.  Third place overall went to Heather Scarborough in a time of 20:47.  Third place for the men was Carlos Uribe -Bounos in 21:47.  Erin Stephens (21:57) and I (23:02) were the next two finishers taking second and third for the women. Full results from the 5k are here.

The post-race festivities are what separate this race from others.  The biggest draw is the huge, delicious macadamia nut pancakes that they serve at the end.  While everyone is enjoying those at large picnic tables, a local band plays Hawaiian tunes.  A silent auction also has prizes from local vendors for people to browse and bid on.  After everyone talks story, it's time for the awards, which are some of the best around.  The top three in each age group receive carved stone medallions, while the overall winners win huge carved stones, sometimes quite a surprise and packing challenge for non-local winners.

This year several friends won age groups awards, including:

If you missed it this year, definitely put this race on your calendar for next year!

Although this was the end of the weekend racing for me, several people did the Mac-a-thon/Carboman double, participating in Peaman's Carboman 10-mile Mosey, Roadrunner 3.5 mile Romp and Mighty Mouse Scamper on Easter Sunday morning.

Although the fields were smaller because of Easter, the times were still fast. Luis De La Torre took first place in the 10-mile distance.  Karlyn Pipes was the first finisher in the 1-mile distance, followed by a close race between Alec Ankrum and Duke Becker:

Alec's dad, Adam, took first place in the 3.5 mile distance.

Since it was Easter morning, there were a lot of families out being active together:

Full results from the races are available here. Congratulations to everyone who participate in one (or more) of the races and events going on this past weekend.

Tomorrow morning is the Captain Cook Challenge hosted by Team Mango.  The race starts with a 1-mile swim across Kealakekua Bay, followed by a 2-mile run/hike from the Captain Cook Monument to Napoopoo Road.  Next up is a 32-mile hilly bike ride, finished off with a 4-mile hot, hilly run.  Registrations are still being accepted today, but you need to be at the Rudy Project store on Alii Drive with your T1 bag by 7 p.m.!

Event-filled Weekend Wrap-up

This weekend was a busy one here on the Big Island with two events on Saturday and three on Sunday.  Saturday kicked off the weekend with the first half of the MS Ride and also the EMS 5k Run and 2-mile walk in Hilo.  Unfortunately, I've been battling an injury, so we weren't able to make it over for the EMS Run this year. But lots of other people were there, with 400 finishers in just the 5k! Results from the EMS run are available here

On Sunday morning, the second half of the MS Ride concluded, we had Peaman's Pedal til ya Puke, Run til ya Ralph event in Kona and Big Island Road Runners hosted the Mana 10s in Waimea.  We stuck around town for the Peaman event, but heard great reviews from the runners at the Mana 10k and 10-miler.  That race is run on Mana Road, with a large portion unpaved.  The course challenges you with some rolling hills and an incline on the way out and then mainly downhill on the way back.  The weather is also usually a little different from our typical sunny skies and 80 degrees.  Waimea is known for being cool and rainy - perfect running weather.  Results from that event are below:

Meanwhile, runners and cyclists were making their way from the bottom of Kaloko Drive all the way to the top - 6.5 miles straight up - for Peaman's Pedal Til Ya Puke, Run Til Ya Ralph. Full results from the race are available here. Unfortunately, I missed getting a time for one biker, which knocked the results off by one person.  I think we got it corrected, but let us know if you think your time was different.

Leading the way for the cyclists was Penn Henderson, as usual, with a time of 38:18.  Robert Patey of Hilo was second in 43:47 and Sean Maynard was third in 45:19.  The first "runner" to the top was Dene Sturm's dog Bailey in a time of 51:15.  Chris Gregory was first for runner with two legs in a time of 53:33.  Jason was next in 58:44.

For the ladies, Kym Kiser was the first cyclist to the top in a time of 52:25, followed by Pam Harlow in 1:06:01 and Lori Montgomery on her mountain bike in 1:26:19.  Rani Henderson was the first female runner to finish the climb with a time of 1:00:45. Linda Goeth was second in 1:27:45 and Julia Crawford was third in 1:38:44.

For runners who didn't want to tackle the entire distance, there was the Papa Pea Pedal or Plod.  This year, Papa Pea took first place overall in the distance named after him!

Finally, there was a 1-mile distance that started at the top of the hill, ran down for half a mile and then turned around and climbed back to the finish.  Amanda Schiff took first place in that race in a time of 9:39.  She was followed by her brother Henry in 10:13.  Jon Kunitake wrapped up the top three racers in a time of 10:24. Jason and Chris Gregory both did a double, running the full distance as well as the mile.

A special shout-out to Rob Van Geen who climbed the entire distance for his first return to a Peaman event since having a bike wreck in the late spring. It was great to see him back out there!

Also, here is a link to the results from last weekend's Team Mango trashcan triathlon.  We sure had a good time cleaning up Alii Drive!

Up this weekend is the UH-Hilo Vulcan XC 5k on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Golf Course.  Then on Sunday is the Alii Challenge, a 6-mile swim from Keauhou Bay to Kailua Pier.  Jason and I plan to do a relay for this one for the first time - should be interesting!

EMS Run 2012

This year, the organizers of the EMS Run moved the race from Memorial Day weekend to the end of the summer, Sunday, July 29.  But the change in date certainly didn't hurt the turnout, as almost 800 people participated in one of the two events - over 400 in the 5k Run and just under 400 in the 2-mile walk!

As is typical in Hilo, the weather was raining off and on.  It actually made for a pleasant run, with the temperature staying a little cooler, although still humid.  After the race the sun came out and baked everything for a while before it was back to another downpour.

Several Kona runners made the trek over to Hilo for the race, with impressive results.  John Ferdico led the group with a 21:05, good for third place in his age group.  I was next with a 22:57, finishing first in my age group.  Chico wasn't far behind with a 23:17.   Cecilia Woodbury was just behind him with a 23:48, and Lopaka finished in 25:01 to take third in his age group.

John, me and Lopaka with our age group awards.
Overall, Chris Mosch took first place with a time of 17:30, followed by Hiromasa Veno in 17:51 and Nick Muragin in 18:11.  First for the ladies was Molly Schmelzle in 19:42.   A couple of Hilo High School students finished in second and third for the women, with Carmen Garson-Shumway taking second in 21:34 and Mehana Sabado-Halpern in third in 21:40.  Full results from the 5k are available here and results from the 2-mile walk are available here

One of the great things about this race is the number of door prizes that are given away.  By the time you're finished with the race, there are about 10 large board on easels with full lists of prizes and their winners.  After spending 15 minutes looking through them, I never saw my name, or John's or Chico's (making me a little suspicious that John didn't put our names in the right bucket!).  But Cecilia won a Mrs. Barry's Kona Cookies gift certificate, so congrats to her!

It was also great, as always to see some of our Hilo side friends.  Chico played photographer for the day, snapping some post-race photos.

More winners with the race organizer.
We have a busy Sunday this week, with two events going on simultaneously.  First it's the Mana 10s - a 10k and 10-miler on Mana Road in Waimea sponsored by the Big Island Road Runners.  This race starts at 7:30 a.m. and is a beautiful run, with the potential to be a little rainy.

In Kona, the Pedal Til Ya Puke and Run Til Ya Ralph start at 8:03 a.m. from the bottom of Kaloko Drive and cover the 6.5 mile climb to the top of Hualalai.  As the name suggests, you can either run or bike this event.  If the distance seems a little much for you, you can opt for the Papa Pea Pedal or Plod, which starts approximately 3 miles up Kaloko and climbs to the top.  But beware, it might be shorter, but it definitely covers the steepest part of the course. Finally, the Mad Dog Mile starts at the top of Kaloko and runs an out and back down the hill.

Both of these races are fun, different events, so we encourage you to come out and try one!

Senior Strut and Team Mango's Sprint Triathlon

This past Sunday there was an abundance of races on the Big Island.  On the Hilo side, the Big Island Road Runners hosted the Waikamalo Challenge, a 7-mile and 4-mile run north of Hilo with a course that mimics the beginning of the Big Island International Marathon and Half Marathon.  Results from the 7-mile run are here, and results from the 4-mile run are here.

Then on the Kona side, there were two races - the first ever Senior Strut and Team Mango's Sprint Triathlon.  The Senior Strut was organized by Kelly Hudik of Hawaii County's Elderly Activities Division and was a free 5k and 1-mile run/walk for adults aged 55 and over. Turnout was great for this first year event, which I suspect will definitely grow next year.  Although I don't have the results for this race, there was a nice write-up about the event in West Hawaii Today on Monday.  I also don't have any photos, since I was handling the timing for this event.  Jim Gibbons and Sandy Hild took first place for the men and ladies in the 1-mile distance, while Orestes "Chico" Barrios and Pammer Kidani took men's and women's first place in the 5k.

Finally, the Team Mango Sprint Triathlon took place at the Kailua-Kona Pier.  This event was a shorter distance, perfect for first-timers.  The swim was 1/3 of a mile, the bike was 14 miles and the run was 2 miles.  As always the turnout was great, with lots of families participating, too. Again no photos and no results yet, but I'll try to update this once I get them.

After the morning of races and Jason's long run with the Big Island Chase crew, we headed out to scope out the Hao Street trail.  Although we've been hearing about this trail for two years now, we'd never been there - even though it's only about 5 minutes from our house.  No running this time, just a nice little hike.

We made it about 1 mile in on the trail and then turned around (I think the total distance is 2 miles each way). I must say, I was a little surprised at how nice it was! Plenty wide, fairly clear, definitely cooler, and not too tough.  Although there are a couple of sections where I'd have to take it pretty slow, overall this could be a nice run.

Not quite ripe lilikoi.
Jason was determined to find me a ripe lilikoi (my favorite fruit here, which I don't get to have as much since he cut down all the lilikoi vines in our backyard!), but all of the ripe ones were growing way high up in the trees.  Those are the yellow things in the tree below.

He was finally able to find some that were within reach (sort of).  I didn't get a picture of it, but there was some jumping, hat waving, and tree branch pulling before I walked away with 3 ripe lilikoi.  Of course, as soon as we finished our hike, we found the nicest ripe lilikoi of the day laying on the ground right next to the car.

Fiddlehead
Up this weekend is Peaman's Zoomin' Zak Plunge and Plod Biathlon, a 1/2 mile swim and 3.9 mile run. See you there at 8:03 a.m. at the Kailua Pier!

Hilo to Volcano Ultramarathon and Relay

This past weekend it was time again for the Hilo to Volcano 50K Ultramarathon and Relay.  Jason has participated in this event the last two years, and this year I joined in, too.  But only for the relay portion of the event.  After running that course, I have nothing but respect for those runners that complete the ultra by themselves (well, maybe I think they're a tad bit crazy, too!).  The course is all uphill - going from sea level in Hilo to approimately 4,000 feet above sea level in Volcano!

I've included some pictures in this post, both taken by me and some from the Big Island Road Runners.  Big Island Road Runners has a ton more photos here, so definitely check those out!

The ultramarathon starts at 6 a.m. at Coconut Island.  At that point, it's still dark out, so ultramarathoners are required to wear reflective vests and lights. This race grew enormously in the past year, up almost 50% over last year, with 40 individual finishers and 38 relay teams.

Ultramarathon start line. Photo by Big Island Road Runners.
After the ultrarunners head out, it's time for the relays at 6:30.  It's still pretty dark at that point, so the whole first leg of the relay is essentially in the dark.  My team, the Kona Wahines, was made up of me (first leg), Lokana Reed (second leg), and Maggie Leite (anchor leg).  Jason's Big Island Running Company team was Sal Salmi (first leg), Tim Urbine (second leg) and Jason on the last leg.
Relay Start. Photo by Big Island Road Runners
The relays generally consist of three person teams, switching off at every even numbered mile marker.  So each relay member runs 5 2-mile legs.  They also allow super teams, which is anything over 3 runners.  The super teams can kind of make up their own rules for switching off, but they aren't eligible for awards.  As you can imagine, the relay exchanges are pretty crowded at the beginning of the race, but they begin to thin out as the race goes on.
Typical relay exchange point.
Lokana tagging off to teammate Maggie and her daughter Dominique (who also ran all of Maggie's legs for her longest run ever!).
But the relay exchange points are actually pretty fun.  You get to chat with the other teams as you wait for your runner.  We ended up leapfrogging quite a bit with another Kona team - Go!155! They'd be ahead at some exchanges and we'd beat them to others.  It certainly keeps things interesting.

Photo by Big Island Road Runners
One unknown for any race is always the weather.  In Hilo and Volcano you always worry about the rain.  But this year, the weather was perfect.  It was a little overcast in the beginning, but cleared up and was nice and sunny in Volcano.  And since you're up at elevation, the heat wasn't too bad, either.  We even got to see a couple of rainbows while out on the course.

Kona was very well represented in the race.  Below is a picture of Kona girl Jolene and her son getting ready to cross the finish line.  Jolene ran the entire distance and looked amazingly fresh the whole time! Congrats, Jolene! You are awesome!

Since we were out on the course, it was kind of hard to know what was going on in the race.  But Jason's relay team finished in second place behind Royal Flush.  And our team finished! Here we are getting ready to run across the finish line:
Kona Wahines - Melissa, Maggie and Lokana

Kona Wahines and K-Town Haoles

In the ultramarathon, David Carlsson was the first finisher in 4:08:24.  The first female finisher was Lisa Hadway in 5:21:34.  Joseph Wedemann (5:12:52) and Sally Marrack (5:49:48) took the men's and women's master's titles.

Full results from both races are below.

Congratulations to all of the finishers and huge mahalos to the Big Island Road Runners, especially Alan Ryan, Keith Marrack and Dano Banks who put on this great race.  Also, special thanks to Brittany Leite for being our awesome driver for the race!  We can't wait until next year!
