7th Annual Wobble & Gobble

We finally woke up from the food coma that was yesterday afternoon to post some pictures and results from the Wobble & Gobble!  Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in the race yesterday and donated canned goods to the Hawaii Island Food Basket.  We collected a bunch of food and will make sure to post the final total when we calculate it.

Also, huge mahalos to our volunteers who helped out yesterday, especially Jolene, Rich and Ryan Mears and their whole ohana.  They provided the post-race refreshments, helped with the kids' medals and pretty much were rock stars during the whole race and for an hour afterwards.

Some other special volunteers to thank were Ryan and Erica Speegle (who flew in from Alabama just to help at the Wobble & Gobble), Eddie O, Rose, Edward, Katrina and Skye (who helped out with the pre-race set up, food collection and photography - until my camera ran out of batteries), Linda Goeth (who bypassed her run so she could help out), Adrienne Pipes (who I never actually saw, but who guarded the Sunset intersection and didn't let any gobblers become roadkill), Papa Pea (who came through on my last-minute plea for a water cooler) and everyone else who pitched in during the morning.

This race just keeps growing! This year we were up 60 gobblers from last year, with 285 participants running one of the three distances on Walua Trail (1-mile, 3.5 mile and 6.4 mile). Thank you to the Walua Trail residents who put up with the intrusion on Thanksgiving morning. So many families came out to start their Thanksgiving Day together and the number of kids was also impressive!  Here's a group of keiki before the start:

And ... then the camera died.  Sorry about that everyone else!  In the 1-mile run, Toby Olney broke his own course record with a 5:39 mile.  He was followed in second by Jon Kunitake.  In third was Silas Wiley with a time of 7:23, also breaking his keiki course record that he set last year. For the ladies, Jackie Payne finished first in 8:16, followed by Naomi Heuer (8:23) and Julia Smith (8:25).

In the 3.5 mile run, Cody Thompson raced to first with a time of 21:06, followed by Blake Hill in 23:54 and Christopher Smith in 24:39.  Belinda Herd took first for the women with a time of 27:27.

For the 6.4 mile distance, Jon Jokiel surged ahead with a time of 42:18, followed by Allin Franco in 45:21 and Dan Gampon in 45:51.  Maggie Newman took the four-legged crown with a speedy time of 48:24.  Zoe Sims' 54:24 took first place, with Dar Kmeat in second at 55:04 and Megan Livingston in third with a time of 56:55.
