Resolution Runs

We're only 7 days into the New Year and we've already run two 5k races - one on each side of the island.  Last weekend was Big Dog's Resolution Run at Coconut Island in Hilo.  After a tame New Year's Eve, we got up early to make the 90 minute drive to Hilo.  We got there in plenty of time for the 9 a.m. race - a welcome time for many New Year's revelers.

The weather was actually pretty nice for that race time - a little overcast and cool. The race had a great turnout, with 200 runners and walkers starting off the new year on the right foot.  Since Jason and I both ran, we weren't able to take any pictures of the race, but Big Dog has posted several photos on his blog. 

Jason ran away with the race and finished in first with a time of 16:58.  David Collier finished second in 18:35, followed by Tanner Hunt in 18:49.  In the women's race, I ran 22:55 to come in first, with Elizabeth Thompson taking second in 23:33. Full results are available here.

On the way back from the race, Jason and I took some time to explore the east side of the island, visiting Akaka Falls:

Then this past Saturday, we participated in the Hawaii Island United Way's Resolution Runs hosted by Big Island Road Runners and sponsored by HELCO.  Two 5k races were held simultaneously, one in Hilo and one in Kona.  The run in Kona was held out at Old Airport and ran portions on the old runway, the walking/jogging path and Kuakini.

The race was a tight one as Garrett Prinslow and Jason battled the first 2.5 miles for first place.  But Garrett's college cross country legs proved to be too much for Jason in the last half mile as Garrett pulled away and won in a time of 17:15.  Jason took second in 17:34, and Jerry Lack was third in 17:46.

In the women's race, Donna Anderson ran away from the rest of us in the first half mile and never looked back. She finished in 20:02 for first place.  Cathy Lack was second in 22:49, and I placed third (thanks to finish line kick) in 23:16. Full results from the race are below.

After the race, everyone enjoyed the post-race refreshments and random raffle drawings, with prizes donated by KTA, Big Island Delights and other vendors.  More photos from the Kona race are available here.

Start of Resolution Run in Hilo

 In Hilo, the run started at the same time at Lili'oukalani Gardens.  Chris Gregory took first overall with his time of 17:33, followed by Jonathan Ucker in 18:05 and Anthony Horstman in 18:52.  For the ladies, it was Lory Hunter taking first in 22:57. Rita Garcia (24:26) and Iris Liberato (25:31) came in second and third place.
