Run for Hops and Kona Brewers Festival

This weekend was the Kona Brewers Festival here in town hosted by the Kona Brewing Company. Although the events started Thursday night with a fancy beer pairing dinner and a golf outing on Friday, we didn't get involved until Saturday morning for the 3rd Annual Run for Hops. The event was a 5K/10K benefiting PATH (Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii), a great group that is working to make Hawaii's roads safe for cars, bikes, runners and walkers and providing access to trails to encourage people to stay active. Their efforts are led by executive director Laura Dierenfield and assisted by a great board, including Run for Hops Race Director John Simmerman. Check out their website at www.pathhawaii.org to learn more about their work.

Anyway, I was lucky to be able to help John and Laura out with the set up and coordination of race day. You never realize how much work it actually is to put on a race until you see everything that goes on behind the scenes. Races are a ton of work, but John and Laura are old pros and made everything run smoothly, including the coordination of the many volunteers who helped make the race such a great event.

At the end of the day, approximately 400 runners completed one of the two distances. Full race results are here. Unfortunately, I was too busy helping with the event to take many pictures (I literally only took 5), but here are a few I managed to snap.

The run started and finished at the Kona Brewing Company. The 5K course ran out to the Old Airport and back, while the 10K continued on around Kona's Old Industrial Area. In the 5K, Luis De la Torre finished first with a time of 16:08, Penn Henderson came in second at 16:19 and Jason was third at 17 minutes flat. For the women, Rani Tanimoto was the first finisher in 18:27, Dawn Velasquez came next at 22:20 and Vicky Boyd finished third in 22:45.

While the first half of the 10K ran the same course as the 5K, the second half was much tougher with plenty of hills thrown in for good measure. Billy Barnett was the overall winner at 34:44 and Bree Wee was the female winner (and second overall) with a time of 37:08. Eric Neilsen and Tim Keirnan were second and third for the men, while Shannon Donley and Karen Brisson took second and third for the women.

After the races, runners were able to enjoy beer from Kona Brewing Company and all kinds of awards and prizes. The top two finishers from each age group in each event won prizes. Then there was a raffle for nearly a hundred other prizes donated by the generous race sponsors. I think they tried to make sure no one left empty-handed!

Once the race was over and things were packed up, I was able to take a little break, but then headed into work so Jason could attend the actual Brewers' Fest. The Brewers Fest brought in over 30 different breweries from around the country and many local restaurants showcasing some of their food. The entrance ticket got you all the pupus you could eat and eight different beer tastings. Jason really enjoyed the chance to sample all those different beers, although his report was that nothing compared to his beloved Three Floyds. Maybe next year he'll get lucky and they'll make it out to the event. And maybe next year I'll get lucky and we'll get someone to watch the store so I can attend the Brewers' Fest, too! (Although I can't complain too much because I did get to attend the volunteers party on Sunday afternoon, which featured some of the beer from the event, Kona Brewery pizza and gifts for all the volunteers.)

Congratulations to PATH for a great race, Kona Brewery for a great weekend of events and to all the finishers of the Run for Hops!
